Summary

The Automation Engineer will create automated systems for use in a production and manufacturing environment. This position will collaborate with departmental and corporate leadership to determine existing automation capabilities and future opportunities, creating detailed project road maps for automation projects that support our business objectives.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in, and potentially lead a growing team of engineers to accomplish multiple automation projects of various sizes and priority levels. 
  • Work with site leaders and stakeholders to identify automation opportunities, develop ROI, and execute projects.
  • Plan, lead, and coordinate automation projects to improve manufacturing process productivity, quality and safety.
  • Create detailed road maps to guide automation projects from conception to final implementation.
  • Research, design, and implement automation technology as it pertains to our processes.
  • Communication with suppliers and internal customers about project details.
  • Support existing automation technology with component and process upgrades.
  • Write detailed automation and equipment specifications to drive the vendor RFP, selection, and validation process.
  • Work with a team to enhance and update existing equipment.
  • Visit vendors and attend tradeshows to stay current on automation technology.
  • Ensure automation technology and best practices are leveraged across multiple sites.
  • Support design and manufacturing engineering teams in improving product designs and processes for automation.

 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent experience
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in process automation or related role, including project management
  • Experience leading high value capital projects to drive process improvement and meet operational goals.
  • Experience with the design and implementation of automated systems, especially as related to manufacturing.
  • Experience with controllers, sensors, and actuators.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills 
  • Eager ownership attitude to “get it done” and willingness to be hands-on.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; working knowledge of 3D CAD (SolidWorks)
  • Experience interpreting detailed technical drawings and specifications. 
  • Experience with machining, cutting, soldering, and welding operations.
  • Experience working with and managing external automation vendors, OEM’s, contractors, etc.
  • Experience with automation components/controls, PLC’s / HMI’s, robotics, sensors, and vision inspection.
