SUMMARY

The Materials Engineer supports a multi-disciplined engineering organization including design engineering, quality engineering and manufacturing engineering. Materials engineer will develop processes to incorporate new materials used in a variety of products. This is a broad-spectrum position working with plastics, metals, glass and ceramics depending on product and application.

The Materials Engineer will be responsible for identifying new materials, troubleshooting problems with current materials and consulting with process, manufacturing, design and applications engineers. Engineer must stay up to date on industry standards, government regulations and new developments in the field.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review plans for new products and make recommendations for the selection of materials based on design objectives, such as heat resistance, weldability, strength, weight and cost

  • Analyze product issues and failure data to understand the causes of problems and develop improvements and/or more innovative solutions

  • Analyze materials and data, conduct tests, troubleshoot, monitor performance and create documentation.

  • Conduct tests on raw materials and finished products to ensure they meet quality standards and specifications. Provide technical advice about suitability of a wide variety of materials

  • Prepare budgets and proposals, write reports and analyze labor costs and ensure all projects remain within budget

  • Serve as primary point of contact with suppliers, customers and internal technical staff regarding materials related technical topics

  • Provide training for processes and equipment as required

  • Ensure compliance with internal and customer standards, processes, and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • BS/MS in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering

  • Thorough knowledge of material properties and processes

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications

  • Eager ownership attitude to “get it done” and willingness to be hands-on

  • Experience interpreting detailed technical drawings and specifications

  • Experience with extrusion, molding, machining, cutting, soldering and welding operations

  • Skilled with Design of Experiments (DOE) activities
